Pacifica Wednesday WeeklyNovember 28, 2007 IMPORTANT CALENDAR DATES
If you have items to add to the calendar, please e-mail the date and time along with a description to calendar@pacificaschool.org KNOW YOUR COUNCIL! As part of our continuing series of introductions of members of Pacifica’s Organization Council, this week, meet your Parent Participation Chair: Sahira Traband I consider myself very blessed to be a member of the Pacifica community in my capacities both as parent of a first grader, and co-chair of the Parent Participation Committee. My journey here has been long, and sometimes painful, but after many diverse experiences I finally feel like I have found a home for our family in which to learn and grow together. My own formal education includes attendance at a primary school in Cambridge, England, home schooling in a village in Pakistan, P.S. 49 in Queens, New York, public school in suburban New Jersey, and a B.A. in Sociology at Rutgers University. My professional background is also varied, including teaching at both the elementary and high school levels in East Orange, N.J., non-profit program administration with a focus on volunteer management, and professional organizing. (I am still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up.) At this time the focus of my life is nurturing my family. My husband Fred is a very involved father, and a union electrician (definitely in that order). Our sons Teo (6 ½) and Mikail (2 ½) are our greatest gift and challenge. We are happiest when spending time together doing our favorite activities such as camping, watching movies, snuggling in bed, eating, reading, hanging out with friends and extended family, and exploring the natural and human-made environment of our fabulous city. Our family also includes two rescued animals, our dog Omar, and our cat Misty. This is our second year with Pacifica, and my first serving on the Council. It is a privilege to be among you all. CLASSROOM UPDATES 2/3 Group: The students gained some information about their family heritage by interviewing their parents a few weeks ago. They were really excited about sharing the information with the class and seeing who had families from the same countries. We tied in geography by having them cut and paste their pictures onto the country(ies) their families are from. When we viewed the large map of the world with their faces on the countries, the class was able to see how diverse our classroom/community really is. To keep the ball rolling we had an international potluck. What a hit! We can't express how gratifying it was to see a simple interview spring into a celebration. 4/5 Group: In social studies students have been making maps and studying United States Geography. We just finished up our nonfiction writing units. There are some really amazing stories. We went on two field trips: first we went to a play at the Kurt Douglas called "Handle with Care" and we also went to the Gene Autry Museum. |
