PARENTS NEEDED

We have the opportunity to send our teachers to a two-day workshop at Open Charter this Thursday and Friday. As a result, we will have substitute teachers school-wide, Tracie and Gabe will be with their groups and Janette, Laura and Lisa will be in classrooms. Needless to say, we would appreciate as much parent support as possible.

SATURDAY GARDEN PARTY II

Join us on Saturday, April 14th from 10am – 1pm to work on the garden. Bring snacks! Contact Jeannette Orlando for more information, 310-313-1206 or jeannette@pacificaschool.org.

SAVE THE DATE: MAY 15th, 3:00 PM: ALFIE KOHN COMES TO PACIFICA!

This is a rare opportunity made available free of charge to parents and educators thanks to support from Pacifica Community Charter School, New Roads School and the Palms Neighborhood Council:

Alfie Kohn, author of Punished By Rewards, What To Look For In A Classroom, Unconditional

Parenting and the newly released The Homework Myth will speak about “The Negative Effects of

Reward/Punishment Systems and Homework on Learning.”

Alfie Kohn is known for his lectures and books based on respected research findings that take a sledgehammer to conventional wisdom about parenting and education. Time Magazine characterizes Mr. Kohn as “perhaps the country's most outspoken critic of education's fixation on grades [and] test scores."

This event will be held in the First Lutheran Church Main Building (adjacent to Pacifica), 3735 Hughes Ave., Los Angeles 90034. FREE, but Reserved seating is recommended: rsvp@pacificaschool.org

For more information, please visit alfiekohn.org. For more information on sponsoring organizations please visit www.PacificaSchool.org, www.NewRoads.org, www.palms-ca.us.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

We need help preparing for the Alfie Kohn event. If you can do any of the following things, please contact Lisa Givot at lisag@pacificaschool.org.

  • Distribute Flyers to schools, libraries and other public places
  • Call school tour attendees to personally invite to the event
  • Arrange Child Care for the event
  • Coordinate Information Tables for Pacifica, New Roads and Palms Neighborhood Council
  • Make posters/banners for the event

SPRING ART FESTIVAL IS COMING SOON!

We’re still finalizing the date, but we’re starting to get ready for the festival! Student booth sign-up sheets and donation/sponsorship letters (more on this in a moment) will be delivered to family mail boxes soon. Donation/Sponsorship letters are for use in soliciting for donations from local merchants, etc. for use as selling items, prizes, or materials to be used at the festival. If you don’t feel comfortable asking for donations, please leave contact information for merchants you think we should ask in the Kinney family mailbox, or e-mail Doris at doris@pacificaschool.org.

PARKING REMINDER
Pacifica Families MAY NOT park in the spots just south of the front door, in front of the neighbors dumpsters or in the spots across from there. Those are ASSIGNED SPOTS for our neighboring apartment complex TENANTS ONLY! Your car may be towed if you park there. Even if you think you are just running in for a moment or dropping off kids PLEASE DO NOT BOCK DRIVEWAY, OR SPOTS, OR PARK THERE! Our neighbors are very upset. We would like to continue our good relationship with the community around us and respect their needs.

The same should be said for the parking spots across the street from the front of the school.

If you have questions or do not understand what spots we are talking about, please call or come see Lisa in the office. Thank you for your help in this matter.

CLASSROOM UPDATES

2/3/4 Group:

We finished our family projects right before break. Our Family Night that we celebrated with 7-8 was a huge success. So many people showed up, our kids had to sing "Country Roads" and "I Will" for two audiences! It was fun to share our projects, eat special family dishes, and socialize with families that we don't always have a chance to spend time with.

We are asking kids to bring in their Lifebooks on Thursday, April 12th. We will be holding on to them through next week.

Patrick, Melissa, and Sascha will be out at a training on April 12th and 13th. We will be having discussions in class about the importance of following limits and appropriate behavior with the substitutes. Janette, Laura, and Lisa will be in classrooms on these two days. Please reinforce this conversation at home. If there is any way you can volunteer on Thursday or Friday, Gabe would greatly appreciate it. Having all of the parent help we can get is hugely important.
