TEACHING GARDEN

Our recent “Garden Party” was a great success. Parents and students helped get the garden ready for Spring planting. We would like to have wildflowers and herbs blooming soon and transform the planter boxes in mini-vegetable gardens. Thanks to all who could make it for your ideas and hard work – for those who couldn’t make it there will be more opportunities to participate – we will keep you posted.

Teachers, please discuss with your students what they would like planted and what they would like to do to help make our garden grow (growing seedlings in the classrooms, watering, weeding, etc.).

Please leave your lists in the McLain parent mailbox by Wednesday 3/28/07. It is also important for teachers to assist students with learning what activities are appropriate in the garden so that it can be healthy and grow.

Since we have no budget, we are asking parents, teachers/staff, friends, and family to donate seeds and plants once we have the students’ lists.  We will keep you posted on what we will need.

5/6 Group:

Hello all you 5/6 parents out there!!! This week we are counting down the days until spring break and it looks like when you get this weekly there will be only 2 more complete days!! In class we are continuing our math work on finding, defining and measuring angles and triangles. Another group is starting to learn about identifying the relationships between perpendicular and parallel lines as well as reviewing angles and triangles, and working on logic problems. In language arts the students are working on the writing process to produce an explanatory essay by the end of this week (March 30th). Please check-in with your son/daughter as the process has been deliberate and structured to meet learning needs.

FYI: Some students took out library books from the Palms-Rancho library. Please remember to return them.

If you have not seen David/Ramiza for a parent-conference, please schedule one for this week (or after break), as the importance of acknowledging the process your child has been a part of is much too valuable to by-pass.

Lastly, We strongly encourage parents to begin to prepare their child for the state tests that are coming up (in May) by buying practice books (see us if you are unsure); reading with your child; using basic math skills in your everyday life and talking about what tests mean and the things your child can do in order to mentally/emotionally prepare themselves.

David and Ramiza

P.S. If there was a math assessment in your family box, please return it after viewing it. The people that were given it were: Michael, Jordan, Emmanuel, Gabe, Emma, Parsa, Bomani, Antonio, Des, Hanan, Tatiana, Guru-Kirtan, Justin and Julius. Please note that this assessment was an informal assessment to identify how much of the concept they understood.

7/8 Group:

Hello everybody out there reading about 7/8! Time marches on, and still, time marches on in our class.  We are wrapping up our family literacy projects for our exciting family night with 2-3-4 tonight, so drafting, editing, and revising occupy the better part of our time right now. In other news, we are looking forward to a weeklong community building plan to follow the weeklong Spring Break. So long for now.
