All are welcome! PARENT PARTICIPATION We have all made a commitment to volunteer our time, but it seems that many of us are finding it difficult to fulfill that commitment lately. Please take a minute to check the Parent Participation spreadsheet posted next to the 7/8 classroom. If you have not found a way to contribute volunteer hours this year then now is the time to make that happen!! There is a poster beside the spreadsheet for you to sign up for a specific teacher request. If those do not work for you then please check in with your home group teacher to see what their needs are. Remember, we really need classroom support so feel free to volunteer your time in ANY classroom; you are not limited to the room your child is in. Please contact lisag@pacificaschool.org with special requests or suggestions on how you can help. DIRECTOR SEARCH COMMITTEE MEETING Director Search Committee will have its first meeting this Friday from 3:30 - 4:30 pm. We will delegate jobs and get started on the search. Please join us. If this meeting time does not work for you please e-mail beth@pacificaschool.org or susan@pacificashool.org and let them know you would like to join in. CLASSROOM UPDATES K/1 Group: We have sent out our birthday surveys (which you can drop off in the envelope outside the blue room), and thank you all for so many immediate responses. If you did not get a survey, please check in with Melinda. Our next field trips are coming up in March, with a trip to the Santa Monica Aquarium scheduled for the 16th. Watch for the driver sign-up sheet, which will be posted outside the blue room soon. We will include more details in an upcoming Wednesday Weekly... Shaquanda’s project group is focusing on maps, specifically bodies of water and landforms. They are building map models out of clay, based on 2-D representations and creating poems that incorporate the geology vocabulary they are learning. Next, they will be incorporating the concept of cardinal directions. And now, this just in from the kids... Dear Sweet Community, Today it is Wednesday. We are having lots of fun studying animals like roly-polies and bees. We are listening to each other and to Melinda. We are studying transportation and we are learning. And now, here's a joke: Knock knock. Who's there? Aatch... Aatch who? Bless you! Yours Truly (and written by), The K-1 Students of Melinda's Book Club 5/6 Group: Hello again from 5/6! We hope that everyone is well and safe, especially during the past few days. It has been wet and very windy. The teachers and students are very well, and are working very hard as the semester continues. We are continuing with the topics outlined in last week’s Wednesday Weekly. Things that you need to know: · Students will write out the 5/6 wish list and photocopy them and place them into your parent boxes -- please check these as your help is much needed. Thanks to the parents who have contributed. · We have started a new water system: there is a small water tank in our classroom for the students to use. We need your children to bring their own drinking cups (plastic and labeled please) to use when drinking water. We will allocate a place for the cups. This will support both the recycling and being healthy causes. Please continue to help us by providing healthy eating snacks, as it helps students keep healthy, in-class, learning and fed! The students love most fruits and veggies, and the cheese/crackers are a big hit! 7/8 Group: John-Robin is back with us again: yay! The 7th graders are currently studying the Maya, Mixtec, and other pre-Columbian Mesoamerican cultures, as well as the Inca. In 8th grade, we are studying the rise of capitalism and the economic problems and conflicts that accompanied it in American history. In science, we are studying atoms and subatomic particles. Today we had a student-led lesson on geology, which generated even more questions for further study. Certainly we will find some answers on our hike next week. We are beginning a “family literacy” program with 2/3/4 that will be fantastic and will go all through March. In Math, we are going to begin factoring polynomials as well as continuing to transition all of our students into Algebra. Finally, we will be having a 7/8 community meeting soon since we are long overdue. |
