Pacifica Wednesday WeeklyFebruary 21, 2007 IMPORTANT CALENDAR DATES
If you have items to add to the calendar, please e-mail the date and time along with a description to calendar@pacificaschool.org SPREAD THE WORD Volunteers needed to distribute Pacifica brochures to pre-schools, libraries, doctors’ offices, parks & recreation facilities, dance studios, gymnastics studios, farmers’ markets – anywhere else? To help, or for more information, email Heidi Rudd (heidi@pacificaschool.org) or leave a note for Lisa Givot in the office. HAZARDOUS WASTE REMOVAL Darby Bayliss has generously offered to go once again to take hazardous waste to the dump this Friday, 2/23 (to take school’s old fluorescent light bulbs). If you have any items you would like her to take, bring them at DROP-OFF on Friday (9:00 A.M.). Please call Darby 323-737-1163 for more information. THANKS TO BEAUTIFICATION DAY VOLUNTEERS! Beautification Day Volunteers: We can’t thank you enough! -Darby CLASSROOM UPDATES K/1 Group: Thank you to all the parents who attended our class meeting. Please check in with Melinda if you would like to read our meeting minutes. Outside the classroom you will find a sign up for K-1 supplies you'd either like to bring, or simply donate money towards. Also outside, you’ll find the sign up sheet for Community Reading lead reader. This individual reads to the bulk of the students who might not have a parent available to read, one in each classroom. Please check in with a teacher for more details. In other news, look in your box this Friday for the birthday questionnaire, which will tell us whether or not you want your child's birthday on the big birthday calendar, whether or not you'd like to bring in a snack (or treat) for it, and when your child's birthday is. Finally, the standards for K-1 will now be hanging up next to the door in each classroom if you'd like to peruse them. They represent only a fraction of what your child learns and experiences, but they are important, and federal education guidelines require us to cover them. And now, this just in from Melinda's Book Club (written by the students): Dear Community, We've been writing a Wed. Weekly entry, having fun and learning. Sometimes some of the kids don't listen. But mostly we do. We make lots of friends. We draw pictures. We also help each other. On Friday we went to the zoo. We saw animals including monkeys, zebras and flamingos. And now here's a joke: Why did the boy put a ruler under his pillow when he went to bed? So he could tell how long he slept! Truly, The K-1 of Melinda's Book Club 2/3/4 Group: Things are great in 2-3-4! The teachers and kids are working hard! We are requesting more parent drivers for our field trip to the La Brea Tar Pits on Friday. We will be leaving at 9:15 and returning at 2:30. Please try to have your trip slips into Gabe's box by Thursday afternoon! It would make Friday morning go much more smoothly. Love, The Fantastic 2-3-4 5/6 Group: Dear 5/6 parents: We wanted to thank you for coming to the class meeting this Tuesday. We both feel that a lot was accomplished and have a better understanding of some of the concerns that all of you have. We are continuing the same units that were touched on in the last Wednesday Weekly with some exceptions. In David's language arts group, the students are expected to bring a book from home or choose one from our library to school everyday for silent sustained reading (SSR). This book should be at or above the reading level of your child, so as to help them become stronger readers. They are also starting a persuasive unit. We are beginning with looking at ads and "breaking" them down, so that we can try to identify the reasons, hidden messages and audiences the ads are trying to appeal to. Later on, in the weeks to come, they will be writing a persuasive essay. We would also like to ask all of the parents to look at our wish list and contribute what they can (we really need these things!!). In addition to the list, we would also like to ask for any appropriate magazines we can use to look for and analyze ads as part of our persuasive unit. Thanks again!!
