The children of Pacifica (of all ages) do enjoy the opportunity to play outdoors in light rain and puddles that form in various areas of our playground. We are fortunate in Los Angeles to be able to enjoy the rain in moderate temperatures. In order to be prepared for rainy days we need to ask that you send the following to school for your child:
COMPREHENSIVE SITE REVIEW LA Unified will be on campus Wednesday and Thursday, December 6th and 7th as part of our Charter Renewal process. CLASSROOM UPDATES From the K/1 Group: Thanks to all the parents who participated this past weekend for our workday. The K/1 Family showed up and we are extremely excited about the support that you gave. We are approaching our final weeks before our winter break and we are going finish up our Space unit in the Blue Room and continue our study of food and water in the Purple Room. IMPORTANT NOTE *There has been an increase in student aggression (play fighting, hitting, emotional outburst…) and the use of adult language (curse words, talk of marriage, sexy, being in-love and so forth). Even though a number of things can be responsible for the increase in aggression, name calling and so forth, we are asking all parents to watch what your child maybe watching on television, listening to on the radio and games that they might be playing. After speaking the students about our observations, one student said I feel "angry" after playing certain games. Because of this, we know that it is important to translate this information to you as the parent. We want, and we know you do too, our classroom environment to be a safe place for children and families. In addition, it is important to note that certain foods can be responsible for this type of behavior as well. Remember we have a no candy policy and advise parents to pack healthy choices for their kids. Preservatives and sugar-based foods affect chemical balances of children. Let us to work together to create the classroom environment we all want. Again, we appreciate you and cannot say THANK YOU enough! -K/1 Teachers From the 2/3/4 Group: The 2/3/4 group has been really busy. In language arts, students have been exploring story composition and concepts of setting, character, theme, and voice. We have also been working on writing book reports. We are wrapping up our units on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Students have been making their own mathematical games to review facts. In science, students explored acids, bases, molecules, and atoms. During art we practiced painting techniques. The students have also enjoyed being a part of the children's choir. We will have a parent meeting on Dec. 6, 2006 at 3:30. We are having a field trip next Wednesday, so we will need drivers. From the 5/6 Group: Hello again from 5/6! We would firstly like to thank the parents that helped us during our fieldtrip to the ice rink. Your support was greatly appreciated. We are continuing on with our Native American Indian projects for the last few weeks of school. By the end of the first trimester we hope that students will have a better understanding of the customs, culture and beliefs of the Native American Tribes. Our goals for this unit include: use of mathematical concepts such as area, perimeter and volume of 3D objects when constructing Native American houses; creating their own myths/legends that incorporate the SICERE structure; identify/explain the geological features surrounding the regions that each group of American Indians lived in and how this influenced their way of life; and one piece of art that represents a specific region and tribe. If you can support your child at home with additional information or experiences please do so. We desperately need resources donated to our classroom. Please see if you can meet any of our needs: -craft knives -balsa wood -wool (colored) -whiteboard markers -pencils -erasers -sewing needles/thread -feathers (craft) -leather -cardboard pieces -manual sharpeners -wood glue -parent support in the classroom -large rubber balls (PE) -playing cards We would like to have a class meeting on Thursday at 6.00pm (We will start promptly). Please bring a plate for potluck (finger food). Thanks again for all your support and love.
