Pacifica Wednesday WeeklyNovember 22, 2006 IMPORTANT CALENDAR DATES
If you have items to add to the calendar, please e-mail the date and time along with a description to calendar@pacificaschool.org PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY NOV 27 Don’t forget that school will be closed on Monday, November 27th for professional development. COMMUNITY FORUM On Thursday, November 30th, from 3:30-5:00pm, we will hold an open Community Forum. Several community members have expressed interest in discussing the intersection of our philosophy, our individual rights and responsibilities and the rights and responsibilities of our community. We encourage everyone who is interested in this conversation to attend. If there is interest, the conversation can be continued in the future. EXPLORATIONS Our first round of Explorations (our electives program offered on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons) will begin after Winter Break. It will last approximately 10 weeks. This is a great opportunity for parents to share special skills and talents with our students. If you are available to lead an electives class on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2-3pm, please speak with Janette. SAVE THE DATE! On Saturday, December 2nd from 10am-2pm, we are asking that our parent community turn out in force for our next Beautification Day. It is very important that all families participate. Many hands make light work. Come and have fun with us! BEST PRACTICES AT PACIFICA We are putting together a presentation of our Best Practices at Pacifica, with a focus on Parent Participation and Conflict Resolution. If you have any photos or any stories to share regarding parent participation and the benefits you see for your own or other children, please let me know. You can email photos and stories to Beth@pacificaschool.org or you can drop them in my box, listed as Abels-Sullivan. Thanks! Beth Abels, Chair of Organization Council CLASSROOM UPDATESFrom the K/1 Group: Dear K/1 Families, There has been so much going on in our classrooms lately as our students have been busy learning about the weather, seasons and change. We have also been celebrating birthdays, exploring space, experimenting with eggs, cooking breads, creating salsa and guacamole, planting seeds, dancing to multicultural music. Thanks to all our parents for your generous contributions (especially the vegetables picked from your garden)! Our Investigations Math curriculum is underway and you will soon receive a Math at Home packet with activities to play with your child that will help to reinforce concepts she/he is learning at school. We will also be learning about Native Americans long ago as we celebrate families and the harvest season. Hope everyone enjoys the long weekend and has a Happy Thanksgiving! Love, The K/1 Team Food for Thought “Locate the cultures, the history of the community around your school. Who are the local heroes? What groups are working for justice in your school’s neighborhood? Who are your allies? Who can your students research? The media puts forward athletes and movie stars as contemporary heroes. Where can they find alternative models in your community?” –Linda Christensen |
