In order to help this day be as joyful as possible we have developed some guidelines that we’d like you to READ AND DISCUSS WITH YOUR CHILD:
Your child’s teacher will inform you of any classroom activities or requests. SOCIAL COMMITTEE NOW FORMING Hello Pacifica Families! Do you like a good Party? We are forming a Social Committee and need all those interested in creating a good time to RSVP ASAP! The Social Committee will help organize events, facilitate the smooth running of those events, and have fun at the same time! We have several fundraisers in the planning now, including the Monster Mash this Friday, Oct. 27, and the Art Party Dec. 9th. We are also interested in new ideas for social events and fundraising, as well as celebrating cultural dates of note! Please contact Elisa Surmont: surbanks@scbglobal.net, or put a note with your name and contact info into the Fairbanks mailbox. Thank you! Elisa (Russell's Mom/K-1) CLASSROOM UPDATES Brandy and John-Robin’s class Hello everyone, John-Robin here. In our class, we continue to strive toward deciding on a class name. Currently, we are studying graphing linear equations and creating cryptographs in Math. Language Arts studies continue apace, as ever. We have made six equal sized timelines based on the powers of ten, and are researching historical figures and events to place on our class timelines. We are also studying the Day of the Dead and its significance in Los Angeles in preparation for our field trip to Olvera Street on Thursday, October 26 at 9:00 AM. DO NOT BE LATE if you or your child is in my class! Melissa, Patrick and Sascha’s group This week we are preparing for Halloween and El Dia de los Muertos. Thanks to John-Robin for inspiring us with his papeles picados art project. We just wrapped up reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and plan to view one or both of the film versions. We are also finishing up our reading of Island of the Blue Dolphins. We will be forming new reading groups next week. On Thursday we will be joining the 5-6 and 7-8 groups for a trip to Olvera Street. Our departure time is 9:00, so please do not be late. Parent chaperones will be most appreciated. There is a strong interest in animals lately: we have been studying cats and prehistoric species, and are considering having a class pet. On Wednesday we will be having a bake and smoothie sale, so if you are willing, please support us. All funds raised will go toward class supplies, projects, and field trips. K-1 Bulletins: Upcoming Field Trips We are planning two field trips, one on Nov. 1 and one on Nov. 2, to the planetarium and (tentatively) to the Olvera Street Fair to experience a very special celebration of Hispanic culture. Yes, these trips are back to back (based on availability) and we will need lots of parent volunteers to help drive and chaperone. Please sign up on the K-1 sign up sheet next to the teachers' permission slip envelopes outside the K-1 blue room. Also, please be sure to sign both permission slips and drop into your homegroup teacher's envelopes when you drop off your child (by Mon., Oct. 30). Please put $5 ($4 planetarium cost + $1 trip scholarship fund) into the K-1 field trip money envelope in Melinda's staff mailbox (in office). Please do not send any extra money with your child on the day of trip as these trips are not for shopping or buying. Do send your child with comfortable walking shoes, snacks, easy to carry lunch, and bottled water. Halloween Kids may wear costumes to school on the day of Halloween (Tuesday, October 31). No masks or weapons (real or fake), or candy are allowed at school. Please make sure kids also have comfortable clothes to wear as costumes may become cumbersome for children.
Errands We need 1-3 parents willing to run classroom errands every so often. If you are interested, please check in with Shaquanda.
Class Meeting It's that special time again. We invite you to attend out class meeting potluck on Thursday, October 26. We will begin eating and socializing in the K-1 purple room at 3:15 and from 3:30 to 4:30 we will conduct our meeting. Please do come.
Volunteering Thank you Parent Volunteers. Our program is a special one that gives lots of one-on-one attention and we couldn't do it without Parent Volunteers. You make everything better! :) Please, if you have been busy lately come on back. We need and adore you. Even if you can come in for Family Reading time, this is a wonderful treat for the kids and helps get the day off to a great start.
