CLASSROOM UPDATES David & Ramiza’s Class This week our group has been working on and learning about new concepts. In math we have been learning about the perimeter and area of objects (circles, squares etc), doubles, basic facts and how to add, multiply and divide fractions. We are starting a project on The Day of the Dead which will feed into all curriculum areas. The students will be going on a field trip next week Thursday (27th October) to Downtown to participate in a workshop about The Day of the Dead. This trip will also include grades 2,3,4 and 7,8. If any parents have materials or input about this topic, please share with the class or David/Ramiza. The students have also been working on group projects for about two weeks, which are due this Friday. They developed essential questions which they had to answer through research. Some students used the internet, library books as well as own books. Some students also interviewed other students and adults in the Pacifica community. Please support your child's project through library visits, the purchase of presentation boards, the photocopying of pictures etc. David and I have noticed how this support really allows your child to grow and value exploratory learning and of course feel successful. David and I will also be distributing other notices that we would like to share in your parent boxes. Please check them so that share the same information as the students and other parents. And a quick thank you to all the parents who have given support inside and outside the classroom over the past few weeks. Your help has been much appreciated. K/1 GroupWe send a BIG THANK YOU, to all parents and class volunteers, as your help and support are greatly appreciated. The music center unit went extremely well, our music center representative was quite impressed with our students. Some of the K/1 students did a co-collaboration lesson with the 5/6 group. During the lesson the students learned about ABA form, opposites, space, along with other dance techniques. We found that the students definitely enjoy being with the older kids as the older kids like mentoring the younger students. Other students in our group choreographed their own autumn-themed dances, using dance concepts such as level, tempo and location. We are continuing our study on water, we are now focusing on the water cycle. During math we are introducing the students to addition and subtraction using manipulatives, pattern blocks, human equations and math bingo. Our Literacy time (Reading, Writing, Spelling, Listening & Speaking) brings much excitement as every child has a high-interest in the opportunity to engage in the abovementioned. We are working on learning the alphabet, sounds, letter formation, and sentence writing. We are asking all parents to read with your child and discuss the text, as this increases your child’s reading & comprehension skills. Please don’t forget to check the board outside for our classroom WISH LIST... Save the dates: · Thursday, October 26 at 3:15pm is our class meeting (3:15 -3:30 meet & greet/potluck). The meeting will start promptly at 3:30 pm. · Sunday, October 29, 2006 PARENT WORK DAY 11:00a.m- 3p.m. Coming Soon: K/1 Systems notebook (will include class flow, teacher flow, curriculum, lunch/snack times & much much more). *Cristina, Melinda, Shaquanda & Tracie* Article of the Week When parents ask what they can do at home to support their children, we suggest Family Meetings. The accompanying article, “Keeping the Peace: Family Meetings for Conflict Resolution,” has great advice on how to get started. Apologies for the print quality, we are working to get a better original. Quote of the WeekWhen we love a person, we accept him or her exactly as is: the lovely with the unlovely, the strong with the fearful, the true mixed in with the facade, and of course, the only way we can do it is by accepting ourselves that way. – Fred (Mr.) Rogers |
